About Corning Inc.
Corning Inc. is an American multinational technology company that specializes in specialty glass, ceramics, and related materials and technologies, such as advanced optics, for industrial and scientific applications. The company was founded as the Bay State Glass Company in Sommerville, Massachusetts. The company eventually moved to Brooklyn, New York, and operated under the name Brooklyn Flint Glass Works. In 1868, the company moved to Corning, New York, and took on the Corning name.
The company established an industrial research lab in 1908, testing and researching operations related to catalytic converters and diesel engine filter product lines. The company has been involved in a broad range of industrial and scientific products. Corning provided the mirrors for the California Institute of Technology’s 200-inch telescope. In 1935, Corning partnered with bottle-maker Owens Illinois and formed the company Owens Corning, which became an independent company in 1938.
In 1962, Corning developed Chemcor, a chemically treated automobile windshield designed to be lighter, thinner, and safer than existing windshields. While the Chemcor did not achieve widespread use, the company would later use the same manufacturing processes for the company’s LCD glass business. A major turning point for Corning came when it was asked by Apple to develop a display screen for the iPhone. Corning’s Gorilla glass is now the most widely used type of glass in LCD screens, and can be found in virtually all smartphones on the market.
