About Sony Corporation

Sony Corporation is a Japanese multinational conglomerate, that of which produces a variety of consumer and professional products that cater to audio, visual, entertainment, and communication applications. Sony first began operations during World War II as a small electronics shop conducting business within a Tokyo department store, and they established themselves as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo in 1946. As a newly formed company, Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo would go on to create the first tape recorder in Japan, and they later changed their name to Sony.

After the release of their first branded product, the TR-55 transistor radio, Sony quickly found a large consumer base in the United States that led to a full launch into international expansion. By the 1950s, many American teens began purchasing portable radio transistors, and Sony soon founded Sony Corporation of America in 1960 to continue their growth in the United States. With a constant influx of reliable electronics in America, Sony helped create the well-received perception of “made in Japan” products held by American consumers.

During the 1980s, the global recession caused a drop in Sony’s profits, and many feared it would be the end of the longstanding electronics company. Nevertheless, Sony would aggressively begin expanding into new businesses, diversifying their products and markets in order to continue their growth. Leading into the 2000s, Sony found great success in the development of products and services pertaining to the entertainment industry, establishing themselves as a leader in video games, television, and film. Currently, Sony continues to develop new electronic products and services, focusing on a diverse set of divisions that serve customers worldwide.
