About Sprague Electric
Sprague Electric Company was a manufacturer of electronic components such as capacitors and semiconductors, and they currently act as a subsidiary of Vishay since their acquisition in 1993. Sprague was first established in 1926 as Sprague Specialties Company, and the businesses’ first product was a mini condenser. At the time, such mini condensers were very popularly used for radio equipment due to their ability to filter noise and provide signal coupling. Over the following decades, Sprague would continue to develop their mini condenser products as well as began expanding their facilities to accommodate an increase of operations and employees.
During World War II, Sprague became a major contributor to the war effort, manufacturing timing proximity fuses and capacitor products. During this time, the company also invented the tantalum capacitor, that of which is still a branded product under Vishay Technology. After the war, Sprague capacitors quickly became well-known and were often found in many electronic part shops.
In the decades leading into their 1978 acquisition by General Cable, Sprague Electric faced a mixture of expansion, growth, and difficulties as they continued to develop electronics. As they began to reorganize their business, they closed some facilities and conducted restructuring. In 1981, Penn Central took over General Cable, and Sprague acted as a division under their parent company. Once acquired by Vishay, Sprague remained a subsidiary with their various electronic products continuing to be developed.
