Differences Between PVC Tape and Electrical Tape

With so many adhesive tapes on the market, it can be difficult to narrow down your options. You may ask yourself: “Is electrical tape or PVC tape better for my project?” To answer this, we have to outline the differences between the two, their unique features, and applications.

Electrical tape is a type of adhesive tape that is utilized for electrical phasing and wiring jobs. Popularly used as a safety measure, it is usually applied to wires or cables that conduct electricity in order to protect and insulate them. Moreover, electrical tape is made in a variety of types, depending on their material composition. Some of the most common materials include cloth, mastic, vinyl, rubber, and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) variations.

Serving as a variety of electrical tape, PVC tape is functional and durable. More than that, it is known for being a “balanced” plastic tape with similar applications to vinyl electrical tape. However, when compared to vinyl electrical tape, PVC tape works well with environmental factors; thus, it is utilized for outdoor projects.

Cold-Weather Tape

PVC electrical tape and vinyl tape are the two primary types of cold-weather tape used for insulating wiring. It is important to note that the conditions in which they are applied determine which type you should use.

Low Temperatures: Vinyl electrical tape is best used at temperatures between -10 degrees Celsius and 80 degrees Celsius, while PVC electrical tape can withstand temperatures as low as -45 degrees Celsius.

Weather Resistance: Apart from withstanding low temperatures, PVC tape can resist harsh weather conditions as a result of its PVC coating that forms a tough, outer layer that copes well with metal corrosion and bad weather.

Corrosion Resistance: The dielectric strength of electrical tape is measured by its electrical strength as an insulator. For high-voltage wires, vinyl electrical tape is a good choice because it offers differing dielectric strengths. In contrast, PVC electrical tape only has ample dielectric strength to insulate active wires.

Applications & Alternatives

PVC insulation tape is best suited for low voltage applications but has other uses like sealing, maintenance, protection, fixing, and color-coding. Other than electrical tape, heat shrink tubing and wire connectors are good alternatives. Heat shrink tubing is used for applications with lower gauge wiring, whereas wire connectors are utilized at the ends of stripped wires. Keep in mind that other types of adhesive tape cannot be used as substitutes for electrical tape since they do not possess the same thermal efficiency.
